Joseph Frederick Awad, died peacefully Friday, July 17, 2009 after a brief illness. He was preceded in death by his parents, Frederick A. Awad and Helen Dwyer Awad.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Doris Brown Awad and ten children. He is also survived by 29 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
At an early age, his family moved to Washington, D.C. He attended Gonzaga High School, obtained a scholarship to Georgetown University and graduated Cum Laude. Joe did graduate work in English at George Washington University, and also studied at the Corcoran School of Art. He worked for Reynolds Metals Company for 36 years, where he retired as Executive Vice President of Public Relations. He was Past National President of the Public Relations Society of America. He was inducted into the Virginia Communications Hall of Fame. He published several books of poetry, and many of his poems were selected for national publications. In 1998, he was named Poet Laureate of State of Virginia.
The family will receive friends Monday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Bliley's - Central, 3801 Augusta Ave., where a Prayer service will be held at 6:15 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 12 noon a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 9505 Gayton Rd. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, St. Joseph's Home, 1503 Michael's Rd., Richmond, Va. 23229.
