Robert William Storey who devoted much of his life in Columbus as a volunteer to numerous organizations and civic groups, died unexpectedly at 6:48 pm Sunday at Bartholomew County Hospital following a bicycle accident a few hours earlier. He was only 57. He was injured at 12:39 pm Sunday as he was riding his bike and apparently hit some loose gravel and his bike slid out from under him. He suffered what initially was believed to be a minor bump on the head. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and was admitted as a precaution, but died later that evening. It was said he wasn't wearing his helmet at the time. Funeral was held at the Barkes, Inlow, and Weaver Funeral home and interment at the Garland Brook Cemetery. He was born Aug. 2, 19129, at Gibson, Iowa, the son of William G.Storey and Mildred Mckay Storey Koehn. He is survived by two sons, Phillip of Indianapolis and Darren Storey of North Vernon; a daughter, Brenda Rhueman of Douglasville, GA: two half brothers, Edwin Koehn of North English, IA, and Gary Koehn of Parnell, Iowa; and two grandchildren. Storey graduated from the Gibson High School in 1947 and was valedictorian of his senior class. He was an owner operator from 1947-1951 of Cottage Cage co in Gibson, Iowa. He served in the US Air Force from 1951 to 1955 during the Korean Conflict attaining the rank of Staff Sergeant. He also worked at the Campus Printing Service at the University of Iowa. He also worked for the Cummins Engine Co for 24 years where he retired in 1983. He was a member of the board for the Cummins Employees Combined Charities Fund for 15 years, he was also active in the Bartholomew County Retirement Foundation and the Senior Center where he was the director of recreation. He also worked on the Indiana Heart Association, Indiana State Library and Historical Board, Region xi Health Planning Commissions, a member of the Community Services Council, and these were just a few of the things he was involved in . He also had the highest grade point average ever achieved in the Air Force Tech. School and even had Nov. 18, 1983 proclaimed as Robert W. Storey Day in Columbus by Mayor Nancy Ann Brown.
