My grandmother was the daughter of Julius M. Andahl and Esther Myrtle Coddington. She married Dave Andrew Kensler on October 12, 1930 in Bismarck, Burleigh County, North Dakota. They had 2 children: Living Kensler and Pansy Ann Kensler.
She later married Carl Calhoun Spence on October 23, 1945 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada; Roy William Hallowell on January 08, 1966 in Modesto, Stanislaus County, California; and Ellis Meade Martin on April 08, 1972 in Waterford, Stanislaus County, California.
My best memories about Grandma Olive is her love for animals. As a child, I looked forward to visiting Grandma and the wide variety of pets she owned over the years. I especially loved the kittens she had when she was married to Grandpa Roy. Grandma also had a yellow parakeet that would sit on her shoulder and sometimes on the edge of her dinner plate and shared her evening meal.
Then, there was Duke, the talking dog. He really could talk. Mostly, he said, "Oh Momma", "I love my Momma" or "I want my Momma." An article was written in The Modesto Bee about him.
Grandma had many cats when she lived with Grandpa Ellis on the farm as well. She also raised chickens there. One of my favorite pastimes was calling out to the roosters, mimicking their calls. It seemed to amuse everyone that I thought we were talking back and forth with each other.
Of course this is only one aspect to admire about my grandma but I think it speaks volumes about her caring character.
I also loved playing her Christmas records. When she lived with Grandpa Roy, she had a huge record player out in their garage. I loved to listen to those big metal records.
One of the things I treasure most about my Grandma now were the family reunions. I didn't appreciate them as much when I was younger. They seemed more of an adult gathering that I did not fully realize the significance until now.
I would not have known what a large family reunion was all about, if not for my Grandma, Olive. Yet, because of her, I not only have pictures of family gatherings, I have some recollection of those faces and other times we spent with family. It is thanks to her that I am able to pass on so much about our families. Thus, it seems only fitting to include these memories for now at Christmas 2007.
