Military graveside services for Ret. MGYSGT Emilio "Zapata" Munoz, 54, of Lubbock will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, 2003, in Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Va. Arrangements are under the direction of White Funeral Home of Lubbock.
He passed away Thursday, May 29, 2003, in Lubbock. He was born April 11, 1949, in Marquez, Texas, to Alfonso A. Munoz and Josephine Ruiz Munoz. He attended Estacado High School and the University of Phoenix. He was a Retired Master Gunnery Sergeant for the U.S. Marine Corps from 1968 to 1998. He was a veteran of two Vietnam tours, Granada, and the Persian Gulf War. He received the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Navy Unit Commenda-tion (2nd AWD), Meritorious Unit Commendation (3rd AWD), Good Conduct Medal (10th AWD), National Defense Service Medal (2nd AWD), Vietnam Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon (4th AWD), Southwest Asia Service Medal, Marine Corps Recruiting Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Gallantry Cross Medal Color with Palm), Repub-lic of Vietnam Meritorious Unit Citation (Civil Actions Medal First Class Color With Palm), Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal (Saudi Arabia), Kuwait Liberation Medal (Kuwait), SECNAV Letter of Commendation, Meritorious Mast (AWD 3), Letter of Appreciation (AWD 3), Basic Parachutist Insignia, Flight Aircrew Wing, Meritorious Service Medal. He was a published poet in Beyond the Garden's Gate, a publication of the International Library of Poetry, and Leatherneck Magazine of the Marines. Survivors include his mother, Josephine Munoz of Lubbock; a brother, Joe Daniel Munoz of Lubbock; two sisters, Linda Munoz of Denver, Colo., and Becky Traughber of Arlington, Texas.
