Son of Moses Woodruff and Rachel Hoe Dodd he married Louise S. Morley. They had the following children Mary, Katherine S., Frank Courtney, and Ethel L. He was a Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 26th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on September 3, 1862, and was mustered in as a Sergeant in Company F on September 18, 1862. He served through the December 11862 Fredericksburg Campaign, and in combat during the May 1863 Chancellorsville Campaign. He was promoted to 1st Sergeant of the Company on June 7, 1863, and was honorably mustered out on June 27, 1863. After the war he became a prominent Essex County clergyman,and is listed in many of the marrage announcements in the New york times as the performer of the ceremony, In 1899 he published a book of his war time memories titled "The Songs of the Rappahannock". Which was published by his father and brother's publishing house.
