While at Whitworth College, Ewens participated in the ROTC's Bulldog Battalion, a combined Whitworth and Gonzaga University training unit for future military officers. Other survivors include parents, Michael and Carol Ewens, and a twin brother, Oaken Ewens, who also earned a degree from Whitworth in 2004 and became an Army first lieutenant. Ewens is survived by his wife, 1st Lieutenant Megan Jagelski Ewens, who graduated from Gonzaga in 2003. Forrest also has two younger brothers, Elisha and Stephen. All three of Forrest's brothers are active Army. He was 25.
