Swedish House of Nobility family 513.
John Maclean, 1st Baronet took the name Hans Makeléer in Sweden. Some of his descendants use the spelling, "Macklier".
He was the son of Hector Og Maclean, 15th Chief (c1570-1630) and Isabella Atcheson of Gosford, daughter of Sir Archibald Acheson, 1st Baronet.
John married Anna Gubbertz (c1595-1653) in 1629 in Sweden. Anna was the daughter of Hans Gubbertz (c1570-1622) and Maria Von Quickelberg (1582-1646).
Anna and John had the following children: Carl Leonard Makeléer (1633-1663); David Makeléer (c1635-1708) who was the first governor of Älvsborg, Sweden; Catharina Makeléer (1637-1709); Anna Makeléer (1638-1646); Lunetta Makeléer (1639-1693) who married Joachim Cronman (c1635-1703), a soldier who died at Neumünde; Johan Makeleer (1639-1696) who may have been a twin of Lunetta; Gustaf Adolf Makeléer (1641-1706) who married Sara Carlberg (1647-1701); and Elsa Beata Makeléer (1643-1730).
After Anna Gubbertz died John married Lilis Hamilton and after her death he married Anna Thompson.
According to Jonas Berg and Bo Lagercrantz: "On 15th November 1649 James Graham, 5th Earl of Montrose, arrived in Gothenburg from Copenhagen, and stayed with a Scottish merchant, James Maclean, who had been raised to the nobility in May 1649, under the name Makeléer. Maclean, or Makeléer had been an officer in the British Royal Navy before settling in Gothenburg in 1629. He had always been a warm supporter of the House of Stuart."
He died in 1666 in Sweden.
John Hans Makeléer, Iain Dubh Baronet (1604-1666) was the tenth great grandfather of Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ).
Researched and written by Richard Arthur Norton (1958) starting on January 8, 2004. Updated with information that Anna Elizabeth Cronman can be either the sister or brother of Joachim Cronman (c1635-1703) and that Anrep conflated two Anna Cronmans, and this was corrected by Gustaf Elgenstierna. Added his British title, Sir John Maclean, 1st Baronet.
