My mother's dear friend was a lifelong chain smoker. When she was finally diagnosed with lung cancer, it was inoperable and untreatable. The doctors even told her that she shouldn't bother to try to quit at that point. She was preceded in death by her husband and a son, and she was survived by two other sons and a daughter-in-law, who lovingly cared for her until her death.
