|Birth: ||unknown, England|
|Death: ||Sep. 26, 1669|
William Baker married by 1633 Joan _____; "Jone Baker" was admitted to Charlestown church 31 August 1633; "Joannh [sic], widow of William Baker," died at Charlestown 26 September 1669. (The gap of five years between the church admission record of Joan Baker and the first child born to this couple suggests that this admission record may be a late and incorrect addition, much like the similar case with RICHARD KETTLE and his wife, and that the marriage may not have taken place until some years later.)
They had five children: Sarah Hutchinson, Mary Pettefor [Pettiford], Stephen, Martha Smith, & Bethia.
The claim has been made that the Elizabeth Baker who married in 1645 John Russell was a daughter of this William Baker and his wife Joan [ Snow-Estes 2:286]. As this Elizabeth would have been much older than the other children of William, and is not referred to in his estate papers, this identification cannot be correct. However, in his will William Baker directs that his daughter Bethia be placed with "Brother Russell of Woburn," and it may be that Elizabeth (Baker) Russell was a sister of William Baker. In this connection, though, it should be noted that Baker also refers to "brother James" [i.e., Gawdy James, referred to earlier in the will as "Goodman James"]. Furthermore, William Baker seems to have been closely associated with that group of Charlestown men (including Thomas Gould and John Russell) who would, about ten years after the making of this will, form the first Baptist church in Massachusetts Bay.
