Mrs. Carter was born Oct. 27, 1917, in Ottawa, to Albert and Eva (Clements) Small. She married Jay August Carter, while serving on a Merchant Ship, on May 17, 1941, in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He died Oct. 19, 1944.
Dancing was a lifelong pasion for "Miss Evelynne" as her students so fondly called her. She started at the early age of six when she enrolled at Rosalind Hupp's School of Dance. Studies and performances continued and grew locally throughout her high school years. After graduating, she and best friend, Rolene Galley, began their professional dance careers as "Gayle & Lloyd" where their finely choreographed tap, jazz and acrobatic show entertained audiences at some of the largest hotels and stages across the United States and Canada.
She eventually settled in Florida to begin teaching dance in Fort Lauderdale and Key West, before returning home to Ottawa in 1944. Evelynne then returned to her roots and began teaching with Miss Hupp until her dance studio retirement. She also kept busy teaching gym classes at St. Columba School as well as arts and craft classes in her home. Always active, she opened her own dance studio in Morris while continuing a 17-year career at the S&H Green Stamp Store in Ottawa. Before fully retiring, she worked part-time at the Yarn Tree.
This past May, she flew to Norfolk for the recital of a former dance student who was celebrating 31 years of teaching dance. She and Miss Maureen did a short dance routine to end the recital.
She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth "Betsee" (Robert) Smith of Lake Thunderbird, Ill.; six grandchildren, Ross (Kim) Brooke of Spring Valley, Ryan (Michelle) Brooke of Ottawa, Bethany (Ryan) Ashley of Riverside, Calif., Robert (Mary Ann) Smith Jr. of Hennepin, Jim (Melissa) Smith of Villa Park and Sue (Jeff) Smith of Overton, Ky.; 10 great-grandchildren, Lexanne Brooke, Jordan and Katlyn Dohm, Adam De Moss, Alex and Alyssa Brooke, Hannah and Ava Ashley, Mary Violet and Samantha Smith; and a brother, William (Marian) Small of Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Pallbearers will be Ross, Ryan and Rich Brooke, Bethany Ashley, Adam De Moss and Walter Davis.
Memorials may be directed to Pleasant View Luther Home activities department, Epworth United Methodist Church or Ottawa Scouting Museum.
