O. D. Garrett Dies Home In Florida

Orin D. Garrett, 86, of Liberty Center, former Wells county auditor, died at 8:30 a.m. today at Sebring, Fla., where he maintained a home. Death followed a long illness from complications.

The body will be returned to his home at Liberty Center. Funeral arrangement have not been completed.

He was born in Ashland county, O., Oct. 22, 1861, a son of Joseph and Elizabeth Ciphers Garrett. At the age of six he moved with his parents to Liberty township. A first marriage was to Hattie Noe in February, 1883. She died in 1904. A second marriage was to Marguerite Bixler of Akron, O., in June 1908.

He was engaged for 30 years as a livestock shipper in a firm of Garrett & Gordon at Liberty Center, and he had been a road contractor in both Wells and Huntington counties. He served as township assessor from 1886 to 1891 and in 1910 served as county chairman for the Republican party. In 1906 he was elected county auditor and served in that capacity for four years.

The decedent was one of the largest land owners in Wells county, having owned several hundred acres in Wells county, a farm in Jay county and a large citrus ranch in Florida.

He was assisted in the management of the Florida ranch by a grandson, Ben O. Eastman.

Survivors include the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Beulah Cole, of Liberty Center, and Mrs. Veora Eastman, of Winchester, and a number of grandchildren.
