DEAN OF HOTEL MEN DIES.

William McCoy, Builder of McCoy's Hostelry, Now Victoria, Is Stricken at Age of 68.

William McCoy, dean of the hotel fraternity of Chicago, died yesterday at his residence, 5640 South Park avenue, at the age of 68. He leaves a widow and four children, Mrs. Kane, Ella F., Frank, and William E. McCoy.

Mr. McCoy was born in Ireland. He became a hotelkeeper thirty-five years ago, when he leased Burk's hotel on Madison street. He prospered there, and in 1885 built McCoy's hotel at South Clark and Van Buren streets, now the Victoria, which he personally operated for twentyfive years. He was a pioneer in the construction of fireproof hotels, McCoy's being the third in the United States to have this distinctive quality. He also built the Ashland hotel at Forty-seventh and Justine streets, which is managed by his son, William E.

He was a veteran of the civil war, having joined the Fourteenth New York, and was a member of the G. A. R., Grant post, 28. The funeral will be at Mount Carmel Monday morning.
