Roger Edward Midkiff, 57, of Princeton, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior and the peaceful rest he had been so desperately longing for on Tuesday night, April 15, 2003, at 10:15 p.m. after being admitted to Princeton Community Hospital on Dec. 5, 2002. He suffered many painful months of small advances undermined by harsh setbacks. His body yielded to the ravages of Agent Orange related lymphoma. Born Sept. 2, 1945, in Athens, he was the son of Virginia Midkiff of Princeton and Bernard Midkiff of Pinoak. Mr. Midkiff was a career law enforcement officer and Marine Corps Vietnam combat veteran. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Police as well as the Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) Chapter 628 in Princeton. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Minnie Rutherford Whitt; and a stepson, Xavier Valentin. In addition to his parents, he is survived by two brothers, Doug Midkiff and wife Jean of Princeton and Jerry Midkiff of Athens; one half brother, Tim Midkiff and wife Iris of Princeton; two daughters, Wendy Midkiff of Passaic, N.J. and Robin Midkiff of Elmwood Park, N.J.; one stepson, Michael Valentin of Kill Devil Hills, N.C.; three grandchildren, Rachel, Sage and Cedric; lifelong friend/brother, Bob Besenyel of Lindside; and his most precious and beloved silky terrier known as Baby Girl. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rowland H. Bailey Funeral Chapter of the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton with Minister Erick Riddle officiating. Interment will follow at Maple Hill Cemetery in Bluefield, Va. where military honors will be conducted. Pallbearers will be Marine Corps veterans of VVA Chapter 628. Honorary pallbearers will be the Mercer County sheriff's deputies. Friends may call today from 6-9 p.m. at the Bailey-Kirk Funeral Home in Princeton.
