George W. Carter, 94, of Fort Smith, died December 12, 2007 in Fort Smith. He was a retired salesman for Berry Dry Goods, a member of the American Legion, Post 31, a Veteran of the Arkansas National Guard serving from 1939-1941 and the United States Air Force serving during World War II from 1942-1946 where he received the American Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Ribbon. Following retirement from Berry Dry Goods he worked for, and retired from, Ace Hardware. He was a member of South Side Baptist Church, was an avid golfer and enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his sister Marie Watkins of Fort Smith; nieces and nephews, Eric and Laurah Watkins, Sheryl Hughes, Sarah Watkins, Averi Watkins, William Watkins, and Nancy Gibson all of Fort Smith. He was preceded in death by his wife Lucy Carter.
Funeral service will be Monday, December 17, 2007 at 10:00 AM in the Edwards Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow in Forest Park Cemetery all under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
