Civil War Union Army Officer. Enlisted in the 2nd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry as a Sergeant in Company H, but was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant on June 4, 1862. When 1st Lieutenant William Blewett of Company F resigned in September 1862, Henry Callen was advanced to that rank to fill the vacancy. He continued in this rank through the Battle of South Mountain and Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, and the May 1863 Battle of Chancellorsville. In June 1863 he was promoted to Captain, and transferred to assume command of the 2nd NJs Company H, which had been under junior officers since the resignation of Captain Edwin Bishop in January 1863. He led the Company at the Battle of Gettysburg, the Mine Run Campaign, and the May 1864 Battle of the Wilderness, where he was killed in action.
