CAVENDISH - Arthur "Art" J. Briggs, 83, died May 7, 2010, surrounded by his family at Mount Ascutney Hospital in Windsor.
He was born June 30, 1926, in Rutland, the son of Frank E. and Bessie (McLellan) Briggs.
He attended Rutland High School, and took additional courses through General Electric programs.
Mr. Briggs served in the 8th Air Force during World War II in Okinawa. He was a bomber crash crew firefighter. After serving in the war, he returned to Rutland where he worked with his father at Briggs Auto Body.
He married Isabelle Hewey on June 26, 1948, in Cavendish. They later made their home in Cavendish.
Mr. Briggs worked at General Electric as a toolmaker for 35 years, retiring in 1986. In retirement, he enjoyed working in security at Okemo Mountain during the winter months, and was a familiar figure working at the Tunbridge Fair each year.
He served as fire chief of the Cavendish Volunteer Fire Department for 30 years and was instrumental in its organization. He continued as an active member for 52 years. In 1979 he was given the Richard King Fire Chief of the Year award for the State of Vermont. He also served as a member of the Prudential Committee for Cavendish Fire District II for many years. He served on the Cavendish Ambulance Squad for approximately 10 years, and was on the Board of Cemetery Commissioners and served as the Sexton for 21 years.
He enjoyed working on lawn mowers and automobiles.
Survivors include a son, James A. Briggs of Ludlow; a daughter, Lois Briggs of Uxbridge, Mass.; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife of 60 years, Isabelle, and by his sister, Beverly Crabtree.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 12, at the Cavendish Baptist Church. The Rev. Abraham Gross, pastor, will officiate.
Burial will follow in the Cavendish Village Cemetery in Cavendish.
There will be no calling hours.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cavendish Volunteer Fire Department, or to the charity of one's choice.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Davis Memorial Chapel in Springfield.
