Joliff and James West during a 300 mile race on August 21. 1910-Driver Tommy Kincaid, on July 6, testing a stock car. 1911-Mechanic Sam Dickson, Turn 2, riding with Arthur Greiner. 1913-Driver Harry Martin, on June 26, testing a stock car. 1919-Driver Arthur Thurman, Turn 3, Driver Louis LeCocq, mechanic Robert Bandini, South Chute 1923-Spectator Bert Schoup, hit by Tom Alley's car in crash on the Back Stretch 1926-Driver Herbert Jones, during a qualification run 1929-Driver Bill Spence, Turn 2 1930-Mechanic Paul Marshall, Turn 3 1931-Driver Joe Caccia, mechanic Clarence Glover, Turn 2, in practice. Wilbur Brink, killed by a wheel off Billy Arnold's car, that flew out of the track and struck him as he sat in his yard, 2316 Georgetown Road, across from Turn 4. 1932-Driver Milton Jones, Turn 2, in practice. Mechanic Harry Cox, Turn 2, in practice, riding with driver Bennie Benefiel. 1933-Driver Bill Denver(real name: William Orem), mechanics Hugh "Bob" Hurst, Turn 4, during qualification attempt. Driver Mark Billman, Turn 2. Driver Lester Spangler, mechanic G.L. Jordan, Turn 1. 1934-Driver Peter Kreis, mechanic Bob Hahn, Turn 1, in practice. 1935-Driver Johnny Hannon, Turn 3, in practice. Driver H.W. "Stubby" Stubblefield, mechanic Leo Whitaker, Turn 1, during a qualification run. Driver Clay Weatherly, Turn 4. 1937-Mechanic Albert Opalko, Turn 1, riding with Frank McGurk, in practice. Fireman George Warford, Champion Spark Plug chief engineer Otto Rhode, when struck by Overton Phillips' car, which crashed into the pits. 1938-Spectator Everett Spence, Turn 2, when struck by wheel off Emil Andres' car. 1939-Driver Floyd Roberts, Turn 2. Mechanic Lawson Harris, riding with Babe Stapp, Turn 1, during tire test, September 20. 1940-Driver George Bailey, Turn 2, in practice. 1947-Driver Shortly Cantlon, Turn 1. 1948-Driver Ralph Hepburn, North Chute, in practice. 1949-Driver George Metzler, Turn 1, during last phase of rookie driver qualification test. 1953-Driver Chet Miller, Turn 1, in practice. Diver Carl Scarborough, heat stroke. 1955-Driver Manuel Ayulo, Turn 1, in practice. Driver Bill Vukovich, Sr., outside Back Stretch. 1957-Driver Keith Andrews, Turn 4, in practice. 1958-Driver Pat O'Connor, Turn 3. 1959-Driver Jerry Unser, Turn 4, in practice, died of burn injuries 15 days later. Driver Bob Cortner, Turn 3, in practice. 1960-Spectators Fred Linder and William Craig, killed as a homemade scaffold collapsed inside Turn 3. 1961-Driver Melvin "Tony" Bettenhausen, Main Stretch, in practice. Fireman John Masariu, hit by fire truck responding to accident. 1964-Driver Dave MacDonald, Driver Eddie Sachs, in crash at head of Main Stretch 1966-Driver Chuck Rodee, Turn 1, in practice. 1968-Driver Mike Spence, Turn 1, in practice. 1972-Driver Jim Malloy, Turn 3, in practice, died 4 days latter. 1973-Driver Art Pollard, Turn 1, in practice. Driver Swede Savage, Turn 4, died of injuries on July 2. Crew member Armando Teran, killed in pit area when hit by fire truck racing to Savage's accident. 1982-Driver Gordon Smiley, Turn 3, during qualification run. 1987-Spectator Lyle Kurtenbach, struck by wheel off Tony Bettenhausen Jr.'s car, that was propelled into North Chute stands by Roberto Guerrero's car. 1991-Stephen C. White, struck van parked on Main Stretch while illegally driving on track 3 days after the race. 1992-Driver Jovy Marcelo, South Chute, in practice. 1996-Driver Scott Brayton, Turn 2, in practice. N.B. Death occurred during the running of the Indianapolis 500 unless otherwise indicated.
