Albert Rust
Birth: 1818
Fauquier County
Virginia, USA
Death: Apr. 4, 1870
Little Rock
Pulaski County
Arkansas, USA

US Congressman, Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. Born in Fauquier County, Virginia, around 1837 he settled in Union County, Arkansas. Within 5 years, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and in 1842 was elected to the state legislature. He held his seat for 6 years, then again in 1852 to 1854. In the latter year he was elected to the United States House of Representatives. Defeated for reelection in 1856, he returned to Congress in 1858, serving until he resigned on March 3, 1861. He entered Confederate service on July 5, 1861, with a commission of Colonel of the 3rd Arkansas, a regiment he had recruited. His initial duty was in western Virginia, where he participated in the Battle of Cheat Mountain under General Robert E. Lee. He remained in Virginia during winter 1862 and, on March 4 of that year, he was appointed Brigadier General. Transferring to the West, he fought at Corinth, Mississippi, in October. The following spring, in April 1863, he reported to Major General Sterling Price in the Trans-Mississippi Department. For the next 2 years he served successively under Major Generals Thomas C. Hindman and John C. Pemberton and Lieutenant General Richard Taylor. His assignments carried him from Arkansas to Louisiana, where he was serving when the war ended. The conflict ruined him (as it did many) financially. He settled on a farm on the Arkansas River near Little Rock, here, he would later die. It should be noted that his cenotaph is placed in Mount Holly Cemetery because he is buried somewhere within the cemetery, however it's the exact location that's unknown. (bio by: Ugaalltheway)
