Pawnee Chief publisher dies
PAWNEE — D. Jo Ferguson, publisher of the Pawnee Chief, died Monday night at Stillwater Medical Center. He had several medical issues since breaking his hip before Thanksgiving.
Ferguson, 87, was born and raised in Pawnee and helped his father to establish the Pawnee Chief newspaper in 1941, daughter Cheryl Bryant said.
She said he was civic-minded and a family man, serving on several state boards and as an elder in his church. He served on the Oklahoma Press Association board of directors, was OPA president in 1972, received the H. Milt Phillips Award in 1992 and was inducted into the OPA Half-Century Club in 1988, OPA Creative Services Director Jennifer Gilliland said.
"He was a classy family newspaper man. He loved his family and friends and was a great advocate for his city, state, and nation," OPA Executive Director Mark Thomas said. "He was a stalwart editorial writer for decades."
