Betty Jean Locklin - of Franklin, West Virginia, passed away at her home on Tuesday, September 29, 2009, after a long battle with cancer, surrounded by family, friends and her God. She was born in Tuscaloosa, Alabama on June 19, 1929, the only child of Tracy Hendricks and Eleanor North Huffstutler, where she attended elementary and high school. She was a 1950 graduate of the University of Alabama and member of the Chi Omega social sorority. With a Bachelor Degree in Clothing and Textiles, she later received an Associate Degree in Interior Design from Northern Virginia Community College. On January 29, 1950 she married Robert Rives Locklin of Monroeville, Alabama, a student at the Alabama Law School. They resided in Tuscaloosa and Monroeville, Alabama; then Salina, Kansas during Rob's service as a Judge Advocate, U.S. Air Force; then Mobile, Alabama in 1955, where Rob entered law practice. In 1961, the family moved to Washington, D.C. where Rob joined the staff of U.S. Senator John Sparkman. Her children were daughter, Betty Jean ``Jeanie", born May 11, 1952; daughter Eleanor Irene, born March 11, 1956; and twin boys, Lawrence Moore and Tracy Anderson, born October 27, 1969. She was preceded in death by her parents and her daughter Jeanie Van Trees, who died on July 27, 2002. She is survived by her husband, Rob, of their home in Franklin; by her daughter, Dr. Eleanor Brown and husband, William of Seattle, Washington; son, Lawrence and wife Claudia Cardona, and grandchildren, Victoria, Jonathan and Andrew of Jacksonville, Florida; son, Tracy and wife, Kristen Camp, and grandchildren Will and Anna Hope of Herndon, Virginia; son-in-law Stephen Van Trees and wife, Martha, and grandchildren Robert and Rebecca of Reston, Virginia; brother-in-law John Locklin and wife, Lela, of Talladega, Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Betty Jean was an active member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church in Alexandria, Virginia for over 30 years and became similarly active in Main Street United Methodist Church upon moving to Franklin in 1992. Her career included teaching music, interior design and managing the Interior Design Center in Washington. Her community activities included work with the Florence Crittenden Society on behalf of unwed mothers in Mobile; active membership in the Daughters of the American Revolution, South Branch Valley Chapter; and Pendleton County Crafters. The family will receive friends at Kimble Funeral Home in Franklin from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Friday, October 2, 2009. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Franklin Main Street United Methodist Church with Revs. Robert Anderson and Walter Mullins officiating. Burial will be at Pinecrest Memorial Gardens at Franklin. Memorial donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Mountain Hospice, Inc., P. O. Box 416, Franklin, WV 26807.
