It has been said: "John Gillis was the third of the nine among the children of William and Frannie Gillis. Prof.Ezra Gillis,born 1867, said that he remembered Uncle John Gillis who was a good man, very religious,and strictly honest. He was a type of rural strong man and patriarch that has made our nation great.
Jane Gillis, his wife, was a first cousin, she being the daughter of Hugh and Nancy (Stevens) Gillis of Anderson County. Jane likewise was a noble speciman of womanhood. She and John were parents of six children. They were James, Betty, Ollie, Hollie Hugh, Thomas, and Nannie E. Gillis".
