George W. Johnson, age 84, died May 7, 2010. He was born in the Grant Park neighborhood of Atlanta, GA in 1926. He graduated from Tech High School in Atlanta and served as a Flight Engineer on B-24D Liberators in the Army Air Corps during the last months of World War II. After an honorable discharge from military service, he pursued graduate studies at Georgia Institute of Technology.
Mr. Johnson and Evelyn Stevenson were married in 1944 and recently celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary. They lived for 50 years in Smyrna, GA where they raised three sons. They relocated to Roswell, GA 10 years ago to be closer to the families of their sons. Mr. Johnson was a proud father, grandfather, great-grandfather of his three sons and their wives, eight grandchildren and their wives, and eight great-grandchildren.
Mr. Johnson lived his life as a disciple of Jesus Christ from the time he became a Christian at age twelve at West End Baptist Church in Atlanta. He and his family helped establish King Spring Baptist Church in Smyrna, GA, where he served as an ordained deacon. For the past twelve years, he was active at Marietta (GA) First Baptist Church. He had a lifelong love of music, singing in the church choir for most of his life. He penned hundreds of poems that he presented as gifts to family and friends on a wide variety of occasions. With a tender heart, he cared for chronically ill and elderly family members. An accomplished engineer and master craftsman, he had the skills to be awarded patents that advanced the state-of-the-art in aerospace projects, but the patience to mend even the smallest toy.
After his military service, Mr. Johnson was employed for 31 years at Lockheed-Georgia Company in Marietta, GA. In 1982, he retired as a Manufacturing Research Engineer from Lockheed to spend more time with his wife, travel with his grandchildren, and create new projects in his workshop.
Funeral services for Mr. Johnson were held in the chapel of Mayes Ward-Dobbins Funeral Home in Marietta, GA, with Dr. Bill Ross and Rev. Dean Hunter officiating. Interment at Georgia Memorial Cemetery, Marietta, GA followed the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that tax-deductible gifts be made in memory of Mr. Johnson to Georgia Baptist Women's Missionary Union (WMU)-Camp Pinnacle Building Fund, 6405 Sugarloaf Parkway, Duluth, GA 30097.
