He died at 2:43 a.m. Friday, Nov. 21, 2003, at his residence.
He was the son of Albert J. and Maud B. (Elliot) Dearbaugh. On April 25, 1941, he married Betty Margaret Chiles of St. Marys, who survives.
Other survivors include one daughter, Sue Ellen (Ronald) Kohler of Wapakoneta; two sons, James Stephen "Steve" (Jackie) Dearbaugh of Holy Springs, N.C., and Brent A. (Karen) Dearbaugh of Gahanna; seven grandchildren, Aaron (Becky) Kohler of Fort Wayne, Ind., Ian (Dani) Kohler of Neptune, James Michael (Leslie) Dearbaugh of Canton, Mich., Lisa (Nic) Cocis of Corona, Calif., Kristen (Christopher) Groves of Blacklick, Lesley (Andrew) Thomas and Beth (Travis) Denman of Gahanna; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Paul (Donna) Dearbaugh of Wapakoneta; and a sister-in-law, Lois Dearbaugh of Cridersville.
He was preceded in death, not only by his parents and grandparents Henry and Margaretha, but by three brothers, Harry, Clifford and Raymond; and three sisters, Hazel Snyder, Mabel B. Cardin and Evelyn Dearbaugh.
Jim was a 1936 graduate of Blume High School. He was a lifelong member of the First United Methodist Church of Wapakoneta, where he had served as assistant Sunday School superintendent and was the teacher for the post-high school Sunday School class for many years. He served as the adult leader of the Explorer Scouts for three years.
He was a past president of the Wapakoneta Eagles Aerie 691 and recently retired as treasurer. He was in the first class of members inducted into the Eagles Hall of Fame. He was a 63-year member of Hamer Lodge 167, Free and Accepted Masons, currently serving as Tyler; a 62-year member and past High Priest of Wapakoneta Chapter 183, Royal Arch Mason, currently serving as Guard; a 60-year member of St. Marys Council 81, R&SM; and a 60-year member of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Dayton. He was a 45-year member of Antioch Shrine of Dayton and headed the Shriners' Children's Hospital Fund Drive for Auglaize County for many years, and he was a 40-year member of the Royal Order of Jesters, Dayton Court 10.
Jim was a member of the Auglaize Mercer 32 Club, a past president of Aug-Mer Shrine Club, a past president of the William Lear High Twelve Club and a Past Patron of the Koneta Chapter 385 Order of the Eastern Star, serving in 1954, 1993, 1998 and 2002 and currently serving as Marshal. He was a 1995 Grand Aide to the Deputy Grand Matron of District 9, OES, and a 60-year member of the Wapakoneta Elks Club 1170. In 1960, he served as president of the Wapakoneta High School Booster Club. He was a former member of the Wapakoneta Country Club.
He worked as an inspector for Westinghouse Electric Small Motor Division, Lima, for 16 years and then for the Prudential Insurance Company for 24 years. In retirement, he served for 10 years as secretary of the Auglaize County Agricultural Society (fair board).
Funeral services were held at the First United Methodist Church in Wapakoneta with the Rev. G. Richard Bell officiating.
