Stanislaus County Deputy Sheriff Harold Thornton was shot and killed after responding to a stabbing call.
The suspect opened fire on Deputy Thornton with a .38 caliber revolver, striking him several times. Although mortally wounded, Deputy Thornton returned fire and wounded the suspect who was then taken into custody. Deputy Thornton was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds.
Deputy Thornton was appointed to his position on August 24, 1964. He was survived by his wife and six children.
Deputy Thornton is honored at the Stanislaus County Peace Officer Memorial in Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, The California State Peace Officer Memorial in Sacramento, CA, and the National Peace Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C., Panel 45-E, Line 7.
