Stanislaus County Deputy Sheriff Billy Joe Dickens responded to a bank robbery in Hughson. Deputy Dickens engaged the suspects in a gun battle. During the gun battle, one of the suspects got around behind Dickens and shot him in the back, killing him.
Deputy Dickens came to Stanislaus County in 1947 and was appointed Deputy Sheriff September 11, 1961. He was survived by his wife Beverly and their three daughters, Lorry Lynn, 12, Sherry, 8, and Diane, 5.
Deputy Dickens is honored at the Stanislaus County Peace Officer Memorial in Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, The California State Peace Officer Memorial in Sacramento, CA, and the National Peace Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C., Panel 39-E, Line 10.
