Birth: Oct. 9, 1906
Mustang
Canadian County
Oklahoma, USA
Death: Aug. 14, 1935
Turlock
Stanislaus County
California, USA

Officer Lavon B. New, 29, was the first Turlock Police Department Police Officer and the first officer in Stanislaus County California to loose his life in the line of duty. He was appointed February 1935 as a Turlock traffic officer and was assigned to a motorcycle.

On June 23, 1935, while in pursuit of a speeding vehicle for failure to stop at a local intersection, he was involved in an accident.

Officer New was taken to Emmanuel Hospital in Turlock and later transferred to St. Joseph's Hospital in Stockton, (now called St. Joseph's Medical Center) for extensive surgery. He had suffered numerous injuries as a result of the accident and though his injuries were serious, Officer New was expected to survive, so his death came as a shock to his family and the city. He died from his injuries on August 14, 1935.

Officer New was survived by his wife Vera I. (Perrigo) New and five-year-old son, Lavon Bayne. He was a native of Oklahoma, his father (Amos Frank New) was a Texas Ranger and a Deputy Sheriff and he served under Pat Garrett. Officer New's wife and son took his remains back to Oklahoma for burial.

Prior to becoming a police officer, Officer New was a fire fighter for the city of Turlock. On December 22, 1932 a large fire occurred at the Knudsen (Fred) Warehouse Packing Sheds on North Front Street. Firefighter Lavon New was injured and had to be rescued. He suffered critical smoke inhalation. The fire caused $15,000 in damage and took nine hours to bring under control.

Officer New is honored at the Stanislaus County Peace Officer Memorial in Lakewood Memorial Cemetery, The California State Peace Officer Memorial in Sacramento, CA, and the National Peace Officer Memorial in Washington, D.C., Panel 31-E, Line 1.

In 2006, members of the Peace Officers Memorial Group of Stanislaus County, located Officer New's son, Lavon, in Oklahoma and flew he and his wife to California as their guests to attend the Peace Officer Memorials in Stanislaus County and the state capitol in Sacramento.
