Served as Lieutenant Colonel of the 15th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, and frequently as commander of the First New Jersey Brigade. He served as Judge Advocate General for Gen. George Meade, and was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on April 9, 1865 for his actions in conducting his troops in the battles around Richmond (which ended in the surrender of the Army of Northern Virginia). After the war he became a prominent lawyer and pension agent, helping thousands of Civil War veterans obtain pensions for their war services. (bio by: Russ Dodge)
