Civil War Union Soldier. He was enrolled in the 3rd New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on May 27, 1861, and was mustered in as a Corporal in Company H on June 1, 1861. Promoted to Sergeant on January 1, 1863, he served a full three years of duty in the field. He was honorably discharged on June 23, 1864.
