Clara Temple was born in Warren county (sic), Ohio, June 29, 1860. At the close of the Civil war she came with her parents to Van Buren county (sic), Iowa, making the trip by boat down the Ohio river (sic) to the Mississippi and up that stream to Koekuk, Iowa. They lived in Van Buren county (sic) a year and then moved to Davis county (sic), where they resided for five years. From there they came to Nebraska in 1873, making the trip in a covered wagon, and arrived at Hebron March 18th, where she resided on a farm in Thayer county (sic) until her marriage to Mr. Lucas Dewitt Joy on the third of February, 1878, where they settled on a homestead south of where Oak now stands.
To this union six children were born: Lucius William of Oak, Susie Drohman of Edgar, Edna Drohman of Deshler, Alma Pagel of White City, Kansas, and Dewitt Joy of Laramie, Wyoming. Berna Alva passed away in infancy. In 1898, they moved into Oak, where she resided until her death. Mr. Joy died August 11, 1921.
In 1887 deceased was converted and joined the Mt. Zion Methodist church (sic) and always lived a Christian life. She leaves to mourn her death besides her five children, two sisters: Mrs. Millie Hoffman, Atkinson, Mrs. Adda Applegarth; 26 grand children, 26 great grand children, and many other relatives and a host of friends.
