James E. "Jim" McLain Jr., 53, died Sunday (Nov. 30, 2003) at Holston Valley Medical Center due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

McLain served in the U.S. Marines and was employed at Eastman for over 30 years in the organic chemical department. He was a legendary softball player and a well-rounded, gifted and talented athlete.

Preceded in death by his parents, James E. McLain Sr. and Julia Birchfield McLain ; and one brother, John McLain .

Surviving are his wife, Victoria Christian McLain , of the home; sons, James E. " Jimmy " McLain III and Rodney A. McLain and wife Lisa, all of Kingsport; one special granddaughter, Julia Del-Rae McLain , Johnson City; sisters, Ann Tittle, Kansas, Patricia Smith, Franklin, Tenn., Diane Smith and husband Tony and Sarah McLain , all of Myrtle Beach, S.C.;
mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bill and Verdie Lee Christian, Mt. Carmel; sisters-in-law, Toni Arnold and husband Keith, Kingsport, Veronica Morton and husband David, Church Hill and Yvonne Wagner and husband Doug, Kingsport; brother-in-law, Bill Christian and wife Carol, Kingsport; and stepmother, Opal S. McLain , Kingsport; also several nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Mount Carmel.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the church with the Rev. David Salley and Mitch Whisnant officiating. Music will be provided by the Lighthouse Quartet.
Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in Oak Hill Cemetery with Chaplain Joe W. Byrd of the American Legion presenting the American flag.

Pallbearers will be Keith Arnold, Billy Christian, David Morton, Doug Wagner, Bryan Henderson, Eddie DeLong, Jerry Weston, Arthel Salyers and Chunky Fleenor. Honorary pallbearers will be his nephews and fellow softball teammates.
