James Elmer "Fireball'' McLain Sr., 79, 1120 Lomax St., died Tuesday (Aug. 14, 2001) at Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness. He was born in Hawkins County and was of the Baptist faith. He retired from Eastman Chemical Company after 35 years of employment. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Julia Irene Burchfield McLain ;
his parents, Thomas P. and Leah McLain ;
a brother, Ed McLain ;
a son, John D. McLain ;
and a grandddaughter, Veleda Dawn Hensley.
Surviving are his wife, Opal S. McLain , of the home; four daughters, Ann McLain , Bristol, Tenn., Patricia Smith and husband Ronnie, Franklin, Tenn., Diana Smith and husband Tony, and Sarah McLain , all of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a son, James E. "Jim" McLain Jr. and wife Vicki, Mount Carmel; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters, Ada Smith, Ethyl Lee Cradic, Gladys Burchfield, Verna Gilbert, Vesta Dobbs, Naomi Blevins and Lola Henry; a brother, John McLain ; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Oak Hill Funeral Home.
Services will be conducted at 7 p.m. today in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Gary Sloan and the Rev. Edward McLain officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Oak Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Charles DeWitt Byrd Post No. 3382 of the VFW.
