Sarah, who was half Danish, was born May 9, 1872, in Weston, Franklin, Idaho to Warner Hoopes and Johanna Marie Nielsen.

She married Homer Gifford on December 9, 1893, in Weston, Oneida, Idaho. Together, they had eight children:
