David of Pendleton, NY was supposed to leave for a Florida cruise with his family Friday morning. That is how he came to be on Flight 3407, a neighbor said.
Originally, Borner planned to drive both ways for his business trip in New Jersey. But he was afraid he would get back too late to catch the early-morning flight plane to Florida for the family's cruise. So he hopped a flight.
"I was supposed to drive him to the airport" for his trip to Florida, said Richard E. Ganter, another longtime neighbor. "I called Cheryl [Borner's wife], and she told me what happened. I was very stunned."
It seemed like a good time in his life, one of his friend said. His daughter, a top student and soccer star, was graduating this year and was to play soccer at Binghamton University. Everyone in the family was excited about the cruise, friends said. And a big party was being planned for Borner's 50th birthday, on March 15.
"It's just so tragic," Belling said
David could chisel ice sculptures. He loved spending time outdoors with his family. And he was headed home for a family vacation when he died aboard Continental Connection Flight 3407 when it crashed last Thursday in Clarence Center.
Mr. Borner, 49, of Pendleton, graduated from Starpoint Central Schools in 1977. He spent two years studying at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, graduating in 1987 and receiving a certificate in the culinary arts.
After working in restaurants in the Buffalo area, for Tops Markets and the University at Buffalo, he had been working as a salesman for Kraft Foods.
It was a job he eventually planned to retire from, said his wife, Cheryl.
A lover of the outdoors, Mr. Borner spent time hunting, kayaking and fishing with relatives, including his son, Michael. He also traveled with his daughter, Nicole, a star high school soccer player.
In addition to his wife and two children, he is survived by his father, Leo, and mother, Noreen; two brothers, John and Richard; and two sisters, Shari and Sheila.
Known to have an incredible sense of humor, Mr. Borner had recently helped celebrate his father's 80th birthday.
A memorial service will be at 10 a. m. Saturday in Pendleton Center United Methodist Church, 6864 Campbell Blvd.
