George A. Gay was born in Pepperell, Massachusetts on November 4, 1848. He enlisted in the US Navy, on board the USS Ohio, on January 27, 1864 for one year, and served aboard the USS Harvest Moon. He was discharged, February 14, 1865, as Landsman, aboard the USS Princeton. After the war he joined the regular army, serving in the 19th US Infantry and the 10th US Infantry for four years. After leaving military service he became a civil engineer. He died at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts, aged 96, on December 14, 1944, and is buried at Nashua, New Hampshire
