Sgt Martin V Bruce

Birth: Feb. 18, 1841
Death: Feb. 17, 1923

Enlisted 3/5/1862 participated in some 50 battles. Regiment under command of Gen. Custer & Gen. Geo.H. Chapman. Served in Penn. Maryland Virginia in the army of the Potomac. at the battles of Gettysburg, Antietam, The Wilderness, Petersburg and others. While at Antietam, he was engaged in a hand to hand struggle w/a confederate general. And being hard pressed, due to his foes having cut off his hand guard at the hilt of his sabre, Martin drew his pistol, which was empty,pointed and demanded that his enemy surrender. The general dropped his sword and gave up. Martin then brought his prisoner back to camp w/his horse and sword which he always kept as a trophy. Mr. Bruce was captured at South Mountain, his shoes and socks taken. he later escaped, barefooted, and returned north. Given a pair of shoes by a negro, he traveled by night and slept by day until reaching Fredricksburg. discharged march 28 1865.
