Henry Gerkin died at his home on West High street, this city, Monday night, November 23rd, 1891, at 10:20 o'clock.

He had been a grea sufferer from asthma for the past few years, but not until about two months ago was he obliged to take to his room.

Mr. Gerkin was a native of Hanover, Germany, born in 1827, and was aged sixty-four years. He formerly resided in Dillsborough; came to this city in the fall of 1883, after being chosen Janitor of the Court House, and filled that position faithfully and acceptably until compelled to relinquish the duties a short time ago on account of declining health.

He was a member of the 83rd Indiana regiment during the war, and rendered valiant service for the cause of the Union. He was an Odd Fellow, belonging to the Lodge at Dillsborough, and was also a worthy member of Huff Post, G.A.R.

It can be truthfully said that, in the death of Henry Gerkin, the community has lost an excellent citizen - one who at all times and under all circumstances was faithful and true to all his obligations. He possessed a quiet and unassuming dispostion, was sociable and very agreeable in his relations with his fellow men, and all his friends and acquaintances sincerely regret his death.

His wife, one son, and one daughter preceded him to the grave, and one son and one daughter survive - albert Gerkin and Mrs. Alice Jefferds. The funeral takes place to day (Thursday) and will be in charge of the Odd Fellows.

The remains will be taken to Dillsborough for interment, and the srvices be held at that place at one o'clock this afternoon.
