East Palestine John R. Wilhelm, Jr. 88, of 168 West Grant Street, passed away at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, at the Parkside Health Care Center, where he had been a patient for the past several days.
John was born May 13, 1919 in East Palestine, a son of the late John R. and Edith Wilson Wilhelm, Sr., and was a life long resident of the community. He was a graduate of the East Palestine High School and the Youngstown Business College, and had attended area colleges, including the Julliard School of Music.
He had assisted with the management and operation of the East Palestine Lumber Co., which had been founded by his father and uncle. John was a long time member of the Centenary United Methodist Church, where he had been a member of its choir until recently. Over the years, he had supported numerous organizations and groups in the community.
His wife, the former Mary Jane Marshall, whom he married in 1943, preceded him in death on February 29, 2000. A sister, Esther Morris, had also preceded him in death.
John is survived a daughter, Jill (Jerry) McGee of East Palestine, a son, Jack (Susan) Wilhelm, Cape Coral, FL; a brother Howard Wilhelm, Columbiana, and a sister, Helen Meanor, Columbiana. He also leaves five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 6:00 p.m. Thursday at the Centenary United Methodist Church, with Rev. Vicky Kelley, interim pastor of the church, officiating. The family has asked that memorial tributes take the form of contributions to his church of the East Palestine Emergency Medical Technicians. Arrangements were with the Oliver-Linsley Funeral Home.
