Robert A. McCulloch served in the Confederate Army during the Civil War and became a Lieutenant Colonel. He served in General Forest's brigade. He was known as "White Headed Bob" McCulloch. Robert and his cousin crossed the plains together and went to California with ox teams during the gold excitement of 1849. He died in 1911 at the age of 86. His wife Mary (Mahan) McCulloch was a native of Cole Co Missouri. She died several years prior to her husband, at the age of 45.
