Pete Nein, 91, of Crook, died Sunday, Feb. 2, 2003, in Sterling.
Visitation will be Wednesday,Feb. 5, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home.Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. at the United Church of Crook, in Crook, with the Rev. David Tyree officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Pete was born in Lincoln,Neb., on April 15, 1911, to George Reinhardt and Marie Christina (Schmidt) Nein.
In 1915, his family moved to Sedgwick to raise beets. He received his schooling in a country school west of Sedgwick, and farmed with his parents until Jan. 3, 1932, when he married Lena Amen in Crook. Pete and Lena farmed in the Sedgwick area for two years, before moving to a farm five miles west of Crook: They farmed there for 42 years, retiring in 1976.
Pete was a member of the United Church of Crook, and served his church for many years as Sunday school superintendent and as a board member.
He helped organize the Crook Fire Protection District in 1950, and served as president of the fire board for 33 years. He also served on the North Sterling Irrigation District board for 27 years, as well as the committee to improve the tele phone service in the Crook area, the ASCS committee, the High Plains Co-op board, the Crook community center board, the Iliff regional center board, the Crook community Christmas program committee, and he helped to organize the Crook Senior Center Club.
Pete enjoyed participating in both the Crook community fair and the Logan County fair, both as a superintendent and as an exhibitor. He especially enjoyed preparing and displaying the many different crops and flowers that he and Lena grew. The couple were honored as king and queen of the Crook fair in 1982, and Pete was chosen grand marshal of the Logan County fair parade in 1983.
Pete is survived by his wife Lena; foster daughter Irene Kaufman, her husband Robert, and their children and grand children, all of Denver.
Pete was the last surviving child of Reinhardt and Marie Nein, being preceded in death by eight brothers and two sisters.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the United Church of Crook or the Crook Fire Protection District.
