Marian Byrnes Massera, 101 of Salinas, passed away peacefully Sunday, February 17, 2008 at The Ridge Rehabilitation Center. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and friend who will be deeply missed.
Marian was born on July 3, 1906 in San Francisco. She graduated from San Francisco State University in 1927. After graduation, she moved to Castroville to teach at the Castroville Elementary School and met her husband, John Massera, a farmer, who she married in 1934.
She retired after teaching for many years in Castroville, Chualar, and Prunedale schools. She was also a foreman in the Spreckels Sugar lab during World War II. In retirement, she was world traveler, with a love of history and different cultures and was also very active in the community.
She attributed her longevity to chocolate and martinis, and was well known by family, friends, and neighbors for her cookie jar, which she always kept full of homemade chocolate chip cookies.
Marian was a member of Madonna del Sasso Church, the Madonna del Sasso Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, Active Seniors, Retired Teachers, Young Ladies Institute (YLI), the Republican Women's Club, the local Historical Society, and the Italian Catholic Federation (ICF). In addition, she was also a volunteer for the Monterey County Meals on Wheels program for more than 25 years.
Preceded in death by her husband, John in 1996, her parents, and her sister.
Marian is survived by her three sons and their wives, Jack (Rosemary) Massera, Robert (Barbara) Massera and Richard (Celeste) Massera all of Salinas; six grandchildren, Karla Massera, Richard Massera, Paul Massera, John Massera, Scott Massera and Robby Massera; seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel, 41 West San Luis Street, Salinas, CA 93901.
Rosary will be held at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at Struve and Laporte Funeral Chapel.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Madonna del Sasso, 320 East Laurel Drive, Salinas, CA 93906.
Burial will take place at the Queen of Heaven Cemetery, 18200 Damian Way, Salinas, CA 93907.
