YAKIMA - David Albert Kinney passed away Saturday, July 9, 2005, in Yakima. He was born in Yakima April 3, 1926 to Alan D. Kinney and Sylvia L. Lovelady. He married Mary L. Smith in 1951 in Toppenish.
Dave graduated from Toppenish High School in 1944, and immediately entered the Air Force, having signed up before graduation, as many of his generation did. After the service, Dave became a letter carrier for the Toppenish Post Office in 1946. He held a walking route for 17 years, carrying his bag 12 miles a day. He literally "whistled while he worked" and became known as "The Whistlin' Mailman." You could hear him before you could see him, and when he did come into sight, there was usually a dog following along. At the end of the day, sending a boxer home in a cab was all in a day's work. He was happy to get a driving route, where he met lots of good people in rural Toppenish; at Christmas they showed their appreciation with loads of baked goodies. Dave also was a volunteer fireman in Toppenish from 1946 to 1976. After his retirement from the post office in 1981, Dave and Mary became caretakers at Bear Cove on Rimrock Lake for 10 years; the same job his father held for several years in the 60's. Dave was a good friend to many, ready to lend a helping hand, but his number one priority was his family. He was always there, and he will be deeply missed.
Dave is survived by his wife Mary of 54 years; daughter, Nancy (Ron) Nulph of Yakima; son, David Kinney of Salem, OR; daughter, Patty Kinney of Ellensburg; and son, Rodger Kinney of Union Gap; brother, Clifford Kinney of Roseburg, OR; stepsister, Bonnie Richards of Klammath Falls, OR; cousin, Linda Zweigle of Bridgeport, WA; grandchildren, Emmett and Spencer Nulph of Seattle, Sam and Katie Kinney of Salem, and Ricky and Valerie Kinney of Union Gap; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mary Stout.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. (tomorrow), Wednesday, July 13, 2005, at Valley Hills Funeral Home in Zillah, with visitation from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Burial will be at the Zillah Cemetery. A reception will follow at the Toppenish American Legion Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association. The family sends a special thank you to the caring staff at Cedar Hills.
