Composer, Choreographer, Playwright. He was best known for his scores to numerous successful Broadway productions, notably "Fiorello!" and "Fiddler on the Roof". Born Jerrold Lewis Bock, the son of a salesman, he was raised in Flushing, New York, and learned to play the piano while a young child. He initially wrote music for programs while a high school student, and secured his first memorable achievement, writing the score for the comedy "Big as Life", while attending the University of Wisconsin. Upon graduation, Bock got his big break in the entertainment industry, as he was chosen for the writing team of "The Admiral Broadway Revue", which later became Sid Caesar's "Your Show of Shows". His first taste of Broadway was his music contribution for the play "Catch a Star" (1955), followed by his partnering with Lawrence Holofcener (whom he met at college) and George David Weiss, resulting in the music for "Mr. Wonderful" (1956 to 1957), which starred Sammy Davis, Jr. The songs "Mr. Wonderful" and "Two Close for Comfort" from the production became classics. A collaboration with Sheldon Harnick produced numerous memorable works including "Fiorello!" (1959 to 1961, which received a Tony Award and a Pulitzer Prize for Best Drama). Further plays include "Tenderlion" (1960 to 1961), "Never Too Late" (1962 to 1965, which Bock also choreographed), "She Loves Me" (1963 to 1964, received a Tony Award nomination), "Fiddler on the Roof" (1964 to 1972, he earned two Tony Awards), "The Apple Tree" (1966 to 1967, which he also wrote the adaptation, received two Tony Award nomination) and "The Rothschilds" (1970 to 1972, received a Tony Award nomination). He was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1972. He died from heart failure. (bio by: C.S.)
