The movie "Saving Private Ryan" was loosely based on his exploits in Normandy shortly after the D-day invasion. A Catholic priest attached as chaplain to the 101st Airborne Division, 'Father Sam' parachuted into Normandy with the troops on June 6, 1944. He was soon assigned the task of finding a paratrooper named Fritz Niland. The Army wanted to remove him from the battle zone because his three brothers had been killed that same week, two of them in Normandy. Their mother had received all three of the telegram notifications on the same day. He successfully found and escorted Fritz Niland to Utah Beach where he was evacuated. Later, he was captured in the Battle of the Bulge and served time in a prisoner of war camp. He made the military his career and was confirmed as Army Chief of Chaplains in 1967.
