Mary M. Shellenbarger - 82 years old, of Monroeville, a member of St. Rose de Lima Catholic Church, passed away at 12:45 a.m. on Monday, September 13, 2004 at The Village of Heritage where she had been a resident for the past two weeks. Previously, she had lived at Mulberry Court Senior Apartments.
Mary was born on September 11, 1922 in Maples, Indiana, the daughter of Amiel and Irma (VanDurme) DeClercq. She married Raymond T. "Buss" Shellenbarger on June 30, 1931; he passed away on July 29, 1986.
She was a member of the Ladies Guild at her church; the Monroeville American Legion Auxiliary Unit 420, where she volunteered for many years with the annual Poppy project; Decatur Knights of Columbus card playing group and a member of the Senior Community Center card playing group in Decatur.
Mary was a custodian with 30 years of service for the U.S. Postal Service in Monroeville from 1965 to 1995; a waitress for several of the restaurants in the Monroeville area for a number of years; and was also a custodian with Ideal Suburban Home, Decatur for four years.
Surviving are her daughter, Kay L. (Gerald) Reuille of Monroeville, son, Roger L. (Kay L.) Shellenbarger of Fort Wayne, daughter, Patsy J. (Rick) Frasure of Monroeville; sister, Germaine Bopp Leigh High Acres, Florida; sister-in-law, Doris DeClercq of Fort Wayne; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceeded in death by two sons; James D. and Rex Shellenbarger; two brothers, Raymond and August DeClercq; three sisters, Regina DeClercq, Evelyn Brown and Lillian DeClercq; and one grandson, Rick Tyler Frasure.
Friends were received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Zwick & Jahn Funeral Home, Jacobs Chapel, Monroeville. A prayer service was held at 9:35 a.m. Wednesday, September 15, at the funeral home followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose de Lima Catholic Church with Fr. Stephen Colchin officiating. Burial in Monroeville Memorial Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are for Masses to the church; Monroeville EMS; Fire Dept; or to Village Voyager Van Fund.
