Bernays opened the Highland Brewery in Highland, Illinois in 1854. In 1856 two German immigrants, Gerhart Schott & his son Martin, became partners in his brewery. The following year the Schotts bought out Bernays & the company was renamed Schott Breweries, Inc. (bio by: Connie Nisinger)
