CALVIN WAYNE CARPENTER, 75, of Lakeland, FL, and a half-year resident of Crossville, TN, passed away March 25, 2000 at Lakeland Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted March 28 at Crestview Baptist Church in Lakeland. Graveside services with military honors were held March 29 in Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell.
Mr. Carpenter was born on Feb. 7, 1925, in Hawkins County, TN.
He enlisted as a private second class in the Marine Corps in 1943. During his tour of duty in World War II, he landed on Guadalcanal nine times and was part of the Suicide Division formed to invade Peleliu Island. He received numerous medals for his heroics in the war.
After the war, Mr. Carpenter worked in a variety of jobs, including owning two restaurants in Tennessee and a rental business; he also worked as a salesman, and worked for the railroad. His family moved its primary residence to Lakeland from Crossville in 1971, but still maintain a summer home here. He retired from Bordon Chemicals in Lakeland in 1982.
He was a member of the American Legion, and he was an active member and former deacon of Oak Hill Baptist Church in Crossville, and Crestview Baptist Church in Lakeland.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Mildred Carpenter of Lakeland; daughter, Jodie Reed of Crossville; brothers, Reece Carpenter of White Pine, TN, and L. Carpenter of Thornhill, TN; sister, Madge Carpenter of Mooresburg, TN; and grandsons, Tom and Lane Reed, both of Crossville.
