Death of Jerry Thomson
Died at the Soldiers' Home, Roseburg, Oregon, March 9th, 1923. Jerry B. Thomson, age 87 years.
The remains arrived in Union on No. 24 Monday, march 12, and were accompanied by his daughter Mrs. Havemann and granddaughter, Elma Doris Havemann.
The Funeral was held from the Presbyterian church in Union, March 13, 1923, at 2:30 p.m., prayer was offered by Rev. Quinn of the Methodist Episcopal Church; services by Rev. Hughes who read the 90th Psalm. He talked from the works "The untrodden way or the new road." he paid a fitting tribute to this old pioneer who endured many hardships in an early day and helped to blaze the trail that we of today are enjoying the comforts and pleasures of. A solo "Face to Face" was rendered by Mrs. Helene Stearns, and impressive music by the choir. The Union Lodge of Oddfellows and the Rebekahs attended in a body. Services at the cemetery were conducted by the IOOF.
Jeremiah B Thomson was born April 10, 1836, in Evening Shade, Arkansas. He passed away at Roseburg, Oregon in his 87th year. His father was married twice. To his first marriage two sons were born--James and Malcolm; to the second marriage two children were born--Jeremiah and Narcissa. His brother Malcolm and his parents died in Arkansas. James married and with Jerry and Narcissa came to Oregon. Narcissa married James Vickers and resides at Winlock, Oregon. In 1855 and 1856, Jerry served the Government as a scout to the immigrants who were settling in Southern Oregon. In 1873 he was married to Miss Mary R. McComas. to this union three children were born--two sons preceded him to the great beyond. He is survived by his widow of Union, his daughter, Mrs. Elma T. Havemann, one grand daughter Elma Doris Havemann, of Woodburn, Oregon; his sister of Winlock, Oregon; many other relatives and a host of friends who honored him as on of Union County's oldest and most respected pioneers.
