F. Verne Asher, 81, of John Day, died Jan. 4, 2011, from complications related to an infection, while hospitalized at St. Charles Medical Center in Bend. At his request, no service will be held.
Mr. Asher was born Jan. 6, 1929, in Condon, to Fred and Mabel Asher. The family moved many times while he was growing up, but he graduated from high school in Dixon, Mont. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
On Feb. 7, 1953, he and his wife Carolyn were married in Dayville.
After working in the lumber industry for many years in Grant County, he began working for the U.S. Forest Service in John Day in 1982. He enjoyed his work there and the relationships he made, especially those with the fire crews.
He was an avid supporter of Grant Union High School athletic events and enjoyed attending many games. He especially enjoyed Prospector baseball, where he could be found sitting just to the right of home plate.
Countless lives were touched by Verne's optimism, his quick smile, sense of humor and his kindness.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn of John Day; daughter, Debbie Thunell; grandchildren, Ashley Thunell and Bo Thunell; and sister, Beverly Worthman.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Rod Asher.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, the Grant County Food Bank or John Day/Canyon City Parks and Recreation.
