William's nickname was Lear, as his cousin William Riley Buis also lived in town.
Lear married Loutisha McAninch Aug 19, 1860 in Putnam County at 7 AM, after going 7 miles for a person qualified to tie the knot. They set up housekeeping on 80 acres of land given to them by William's father, about 3/4 mile south of the National Road.
When the Civil War broke out in 1861 his Grandfather Riley paid the money ($100-$300) so that William and his brothers didn't have to go fight. In exchange, William and his brothers split rails until the amount was paid off.
Lear and Loutisha had 4 children: Mary Ellen, Laura A, Emerson Ethridge, and Franklin Everett.
In 1867 their home was destroyed by fire, and in 1872 they sold the farm to Caleb F Buis for $4700, and bought another 160 acres. Loutisha died in 1874 at the age of 33 from tuberculosis - her health was never good after the fire.
Lear married Margaret Ann Masten May 30, 1878 and they had 3 children: Edward Lee, Odessa A, and Elbert Otho. Margaret died in 1891 in an Indianapolis hospital where she had had surgery.
He died in his home in Roachdale after a brief illness, and was buried between his two wives. Their graves are located west of the west drive in the cemetery.
