CARL LEWIS, 98, passed away on February 15, 2008 at his home in Gainesville, FL with his family with him at his side.

Carl was born in Galantvant's Ferry, SC on March 27, 1909. He was the oldest son of twelve children. He graduated with his undergraduate degree from Clemson University and earned his Master's degree at Penn State. He was a member of several honorary fraternities. He served in WW II in the fighting 95th Infantry Division. He earned the rank of Major. He was honored for distinguished service earning him a Purple Heart, Silver Star, and Bronze Star.

Carl and his wife Edna were residents of Gainesville for over 50 years where they were founding members of Trinity United Methodist Church serving in many official capacities. Carl retired, after 36 years, from the US Department of Agriculture as the State soil Scientist of Florida. Carl enjoyed rose gardening, painting, and traveling in his motor home. He and Edna were members of the Millinologist Society for the preservation of the old mile sites. They wrote articles for the Old Mile News Magazine. Their collection included pictures, locations, and local tales of 364 mill sites.

Carl is survived by two daughters, Twila Taylor and husband Carlis of Interlaken, FL and; Carline Schaeffer and husband Larry of Tallahassee, FL; six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

Funeral Services will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church Chapel, 4000 NW 53 Ave on Wednesday, February 20th, at 2:30 PM, Visitation will be held from 1:30 PM to 2:30 PM prior to the service.

Arrangements are under the care of Forest Meadows Funeral Home, Cemeteries and Crematory.
